In an effort to protect the climate and secure future energy supplies, Europe proposes to increase its proportion of final energy consumption from renewable sources to 20% by 2020. Most EU member states have introduced long-term electricity feed-in tariffs in the interim in order to promote this highly promising technology. By 2015, photovoltaic plants with over 200 gigawatts of capacity had been built worldwide.
